July 26/27 – Kangerlussuaq, the Greenland Ice Sheet and home

This is our last day on the cruise and mid-morning we were met by representatives of Greenlandic Air who gave us our boarding passes and took our luggage.  Then we had the morning at leisure.  Shortly after lunch we were tendered ashore to a “truck” for our early afternoon excursion.  The trucks were originally some sort of earth movers designed to carry 30 tons of materials over the rough gravel roads.  Now the beds are fitted with bus-like cabins for the tourists.

We had a long, bumpy hour ride out through the countryside and along some rivers.

The drive took us past the remains of an airplane wreck.

The destination was overlook at Reindeer Glacier and the edge of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

There was also a pretty massive waterfall coming off the glacier.

We had a couple of stops in the area, one of which had fields of arctic cotton grass…

and an arctic hare.

Then it was another hour+ back into town.  Along the way we saw musk ox in the distance.

We crossed the massive glacial river the flowed under a bridge.  The water seemed so very powerful it is amazing that they can keep a bridge intact.  Surely during the periods of greatest water run-off the rivers must run higher.  Or maybe this was the peak season.  Regardless, the flow was massive.

The bus then took us to a nearby sports club/restaurant where we had a barbecue dinner in a tent.  The dinner featured lamb and two types of musk ox plus some salads and some very good, warm from the oven, fresh baked bread.

Then it was another bumpy ride to the top of a nearby hill.  We had great views back down to the river and the bridge with the massive water flow.

Along the way we stopped to watch a reindeer near the side of the road.

At the hilltop we had more great views of the river,

nearby lakes,

the surrounding mountains and clouds,

and the Ice Sheet in the distance.

Then it was off to town...

and the airport where we caught our red-eye flight  on Greenlandic Air.

They had used Greenland customs to create their safety video...very interesting to watch.

It was late when we left but we were in the middle of a sunset when we took off so it was still somewhat light.

The red eye took us to Copenhagen where we arrived at 8:00am the following day. After a six hour layover we boarded our flight to Oakland CA...arriving to sunshine and views of the San Francisco Bay.

and then to Las Vegas.  Total travel time was about 24 hours.  A long and exhausting day.
