Another glorious sunny day. We
are in the tiny village of Itilleq. Itilleq is a true arctic village, located only
a few hundred yards from the Arctic Circle, 66° North.
Some folks headed out on kayak trips but for
everyone else, the cruise line had arranged for us to visit homes for a
traditional Kaffemik. Kaffemik is a bit
like English afternoon tea except it is held in the mornings. People are invited over for coffee, tea and
cakes and usually to celebrate a major occasion such as graduation and
birthdays.
About a dozen of us visited our host’s little home for tea and lovely,
homemade cake.
Our hostess had a small wild bird that appeared to have an injured foot and it had the run of the house.
In front of her home there was a nice display of antlers.
After Kaffemik we hiked to a nearby hill for great views of the village and surrounding areas.

When we got back down the hill we walked through the main part of town along the water. There were pretty houses along the shoreline...
and a small building that looked like it might be the fire house (but without a fire truck).
Then we stopped at the church…

Then we stopped at the church…
and then to the main section of town for a soccer match between the
locals and the ship’s crew and some of the guests. Final score was 7 to 6, the locals won. But it was a really good game.
We stopped briefly in the local supermarket/general store...
before catching our zodiac to the ship in time for lunch.

The afternoon was spent in lectures and a celebration for crossing the Arctic Circle…an Arctic Circle Baptism. The captain and Neptune poured ice water (complete with ice cubes) down the backs of those who were crossing the Arctic Circle for the first time. We decided we don’t need to do Everything so we opted out of participating.
